Staff Spotlight: Emily Nathan - special education teacher at Independence Academy
February 6, 2026
Every week, we shine a spotlight on one Lincoln Public Schools staff member! This week, meet Emily Nathan, special education teacher at Independence Academy.
“Emily has outstanding dedication and leadership in new curriculum development for Independence Academy.” - Gina Zabloudil, Independence Academy, Para III
In a few sentences, briefly describe your role at LPS.
I work in the Independence Academy, which is a program for 18-21-year-olds with disabilities. Our program helps students to transition from school to whatever their next step may be. I am stationed at our Southeast Community College/The Career Academy site where we get vocational practice in a kitchen, along with academic lessons about personal, life and career management.
How long have you worked for LPS?
This is my ninth year teaching in LPS. I did a little bit of volunteering and subbing for about two years before that while I was in college.
What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS?
I had always wanted to be some kind of teacher. I started as a preschool teacher, then a reading/English teacher, then my eighth grade class was able to partner with adults with disabilities and from then on I knew I wanted to be a special education teacher. I came to Lincoln for college and enjoyed my experience in LPS and ended up staying here.
What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding?
I have absolutely loved my time in Independence Academy. We have started partnering with TCA for my students to take some modified TCA courses, and my classes have learned so much in those courses. It is a really unique experience and has opened more doors for them that they may not have thought of before.
Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from?
I am originally from Norfolk, Neb.
What path did you take after completing your formal education?
I attended the University of Nebraska–Lincoln to get my bachelor's degree, and I'm now working on my master's in supervision of special education through the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community?
I like seeing the celebrations throughout the community, specifically through LPS. There is always a person or a group of people doing something amazing to help make the world a better place.
What is your favorite childhood book or a book that has influenced your life positively?
I used to really like Amelia Bedelia books and Junie B. Jones.
Share a shout out to a former teacher who impacted your life.
I student taught under Michalla Schartz. She really helped shape me as a teacher and I was fortunate to spend almost a full school year with her while I did a practicum and followed it with student teaching. We still keep in touch and throughout the years I still find myself referring back to principles I learned from her and going to her for advice.
